Book Club welcomed a new member today when we gathered in Storrington Library to discuss our latest book, The Last Word by Elly Griffiths.
Some members had previously read other books by the same author as she is local and has made several appearances at Steyning Bookshop.
On the whole the book seemed to go down well, although some really enjoyed it and some disliked it, with the rest of the group falling somewhere in between.
We discussed the plot of the book (and whether we managed to guess the murderer), the location (set in Shoreham and Battle mainly), the characters and more. It was highlighted that the book was very inclusive and had various characters of different race, sexuality, gender and age, which was a positive point. The book was also very topical, including references to Covid and the war in Ukraine.
Although most of us enjoyed the book we did not feel that it was a book that would stay with you. It is a book for enjoying in the moment, maybe to take on holiday and relax with by the pool. It is definitely one of Griffiths’ lighter novels, nothing like the gothic style “Stranger Diaries”.
Some of the group liked this book so much that they wish to read more from Elly Griffiths and those that were already familiar with her work will continue to do so.
If only I hadn’t… attended Book Club today ….I would have missed out on a good discussion!
The next book to be read will be "One Day in December" by Josie Silver.
This will be discussed on Friday 13th December.
