The WI is a democratic, social and educational charity.

Every WI provides a monthly meeting, often with speakers/demonstrators on a variety of topics decided by members.

Other meetings outside of the monthly meeting also take place. These are often for groups of members with a particular interest, for example crafts, walking, book, theatre/arts, sports etc. These interest groups are created and organised by the members of the individual WI.

In addition to what might be going on at Sullington Windmills WI, other events are organised throughout West Sussex and include crafts, arts, sports, leisure, drama, public and international affairs, leadership and much more.

Although the “covid years” were a challenge for all of us, we managed to keep our members at Sullington Windmills safe and connected by using our friend Zoom and delivering newsletters either electronically or by hand to those not connected to the internet. There were activities and group walks when permitted.

This means that, despite lockdown challenges, Sullington Windmills continues to be a thriving and busy WI.

We are now back to holding face-to-face meetings, but will continue to do what it takes to keep our members safe should any new challenges present themselves in the future. If you feel more comfortable attending a meeting wearing a face mask then please do so.

About our meetings

Our Institute was established in October 1969 and we have a membership of around 50 ladies, with a good range of ages and interests. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday evening each month (2nd Wednesday in December). Meetings are held at the Parish Hall, Thakeham Road, Storrington, RH20 3PP at 7.30pm.

Should you be tempted to take the plunge and visit us, you will be assured of a very warm welcome. There is plenty of off-street parking, disabled access, plus the hall has a hearing loop and we use a microphone at meetings.

The usual format of meetings is business/notices etc., then a guest speaker or demonstrator, followed by refreshments and social time and the inevitable WI raffle! We also run social and fundraising events throughout the year. These have included wine-tasting and skittles evenings, a games night, visits to local places of interest, luncheons, lawn bowls and walking country dancing, to name but a few.

There are monthly meetings of the Walking Groups (short and long walks catered for) plus a weekly Table Tennis group. In addition (as mentioned above), the West Sussex Federation of WIs offers a varied programme of entertainment and educational activities throughout the year.

Currently the annual subscription is £48; however, you are welcome to visit us on up to three occasions at no cost.

The subscription to join the WI is deliberately modest in order to ensure that all women who wish to join may do so.
