Another busy meeting for the ladies of Sullington Windmills WI. With the current committee due to step down in March, there is a lot to be getting on with, including the finalisation of the 2025/2026 monthly programme.
Even though the committee will shortly be changing there are still many activities being planned:
- There is the ongoing “Show the Love” campaign until the end of February. Free packets of wild flower seeds have been donated by Sullington Windlmills WI and can be found at St Marys Church and the Library to anyone who wants to improve their wild environment.
- We have the Ovarian Cancer awareness campaign running throughout March. With white roses and information being displayed around the village in suitable venues.
- The Spring Lunch will also be held in March for members who wish to attend and tickets are now on sale.
- The Sullington Windmills WI Book Group (having just finished Pride & Prejudice) are organising a trip to Chawton House in April to mark the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth.
- April also sees the next Coffee Morning being planned.
These are all ongoing, as well as the usual walking groups, table tennis group, knitting activities etc. We are a very busy and active WI.
Once the notices were given and the business part of the evening concluded, we welcomed our speaker for the evening, Bill Avenell, who was to provide an amusing look at how geography impinges on our everyday life. For example, why do motorway traffic jams suddenly disappear?
The talk covered so many diverse subjects from chalk streams, to the South and North Downs, natural disasters, plate tectonics, ice cream vans and much, much more.
Bill’s passionate and energetic delivery, together with slides interspersed with maps, diagrams, songs, music etc., really kept us engaged.
This was a fascinating talk where we all really did learn how much geography impacts us every day.
An enjoyable evening, concluding with tea and cake, plus the raffle.
